COUNTRY SIDE
Shown on Fox 26 - Houston - October 7, 2010 (Reported by Pattie Shieh)NEEDVILLE, Texas - His races captivated the country. Before 1973, no horse had won the Triple Crown in 25 years. Then a chestnut thoroughbred swept the Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Derby. He did it with come from behind breathtaking finishes. Two of Secretariat's records in the Belmont and Kentucky Derby still stand.
But, you only have to travel to Needville to see history.
Joycelyn and Jeff Kasmir bought a son of Secretariat's back in 1996. They loved his laid back nature, something not often seen in thoroughbreds.
Friend Kenny Thomas was the first to meet the seal brown beauty, "I talked to my neighbor and he said, 'you won't guess what'' across in that barn out there,' and I said, 'what?' He goes, 'a son of Secretariat. 'I said 'oh!' I got my wife and said, 'let's go I want to see this.'"
Thomas eventually owned four off-springs of Country's.
Each one inherited his mellow spirit, "He's got a great temperament like his father. I seen some clips of Secretariat and he was the same way. They could do anything with him."
Country has fathered dozens of off-springs. His father is known around the world. With the new movie telling the tale of Secretariat... many will now understand just how incredible, even improbable his run was.
But even in Needville, many haven't yet realized what's in their own backyard. Retired Justice of the Peace Gary "Ike" Frederickson hopes they do now, " I doubt there will ever be another one like him. So, that'' a part of history that we have out here in Needville that a lot of people can't claim fame to and we're proud of it."
On another note...............
The Kasmir's bred a mare to our son of Country Side, Country Picasso, and this fine homozygous filly was born September 2010.
